Tragedy in Kurnool: Five Rescuers Lose Lives Saving Girl From Tungabhadra River
A tragic incident unfolded on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Kurnool district on Saturday evening when five men lost their lives while attempting to save a young girl who had slipped into the river. The girl was eventually rescued safely, but the loss of the rescuers has left the region in deep mourning.
According to police officials, the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. when the girl was washing her feet near the riverbank and accidentally lost her balance, falling into the fast-flowing waters. Witnessing her struggle, five men from nearby villages immediately jumped into the river in an effort to bring her to safety.
However, the strong current quickly overwhelmed the rescuers, pulling them into deeper waters. While local residents managed to rescue the girl and bring her safely ashore, the five men became trapped in the river and drowned during the rescue attempt.
Police and emergency personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched search and recovery operations in the river to locate the victims. Authorities said the deceased were residents of neighbouring villages.
The heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow of grief over the affected communities. Families of the victims are devastated, while villagers have paid tribute to the men for their courage and selfless attempt to save a life despite the danger posed by the swollen river.
Officials have urged the public to exercise caution near water bodies, particularly during periods of strong river flow, to prevent similar tragedies.
