A tragic incident unfolded in Punganur town of Annamayya district early Sunday, where four members of a family died after inhaling toxic fumes from a running motorcycle engine .

According to police , Murali, a resident of the town, had consulted a mechanic on Saturday to fix a technical issue in his motorcycle. The mechanic reportedly advised him to keep the engine running overnight so the vehicle would function properly. Following the suggestion, Murali parked the bike inside the ground floor of his house and left the engine running before going upstairs with his wife to sleep on the first floor.

Murali’s father and three children were sleeping in a room on the ground floor. As the motorcycle engine continued to run through the night, poisonous gases, including carbon monoxide , emitted from the silencer filled the room. With the doors and windows closed, the fumes accumulated inside the closed room .

The victims reportedly inhaled the toxic gases while asleep, lost consciousness and died due to suffocation .

The incident came to light around 6 a.m. on Sunday when Murali noticed that the ground-floor room remained closed. Receiving no response from inside, he grew suspicious and, with the help of neighbours, broke open the door. He found the room filled with dense fumes and the victims lying unconscious. They were rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead .

Police reached the spot and began an investigation . Preliminary findings indicate that running a petrol engine in a closed room caused oxygen levels to drop and carbon monoxide to accumulate, leading to the deaths. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
