Top stars condemn ‘Jana Nayagan’ leak, TamilMV says film won’t be uploaded before release
The online leak of the highly anticipated Tamil film ‘Jana Nayagan’ , starring Vijay and directed by H. Vinoth, has triggered widespread outrage across the South Indian film industry, with actors and filmmakers demanding stricter action against piracy. Reports indicate that clips and later a high-definition version of the film surfaced online even as the movie awaited certification clearance. The film, produced by KVN Productions, is widely seen as Vijay’s final film before his entry into full-time politics.
Superstar Rajinikanth called the leak a moment of “shock and pain” and urged authorities to identify those responsible and impose severe punishment. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan described the leak as a “systemic failure” , arguing that certification delays create fertile ground for piracy and warning that such acts are “an attack on art and artists.”
Actor Suriya said the leak was “heartbreaking and unfair,” appealing to audiences not to watch or share pirated copies. Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi urged fans to “Kill piracy, save cinema,” while Sivakarthikeyan demanded strict punishment for those responsible.
Several others also condemned the incident. Actors Karthi and Vijay Deverakonda expressed solidarity with the team, while actress Pooja Hegde said she was disheartened and urged fans to watch the film legally in theatres. Filmmaker A. R. Murugadoss and director Pa. Ranjith described the leak as damaging to the livelihoods of those involved in filmmaking.
Veteran actor Mohan Babu , actors Jiiva, Vishal and Sibiraj , composer G. V. Prakash Kumar, actress-politician Khushbu Sundar and producer Dhananjayan Govind also criticised the leak and called for strong action.
Reports said the pirated material circulated through torrent networks, piracy websites and messaging platforms . One prominent piracy site , TamilMV , reportedly removed related links and stated: “ We are aware of the ongoing political issues surrounding the actor. As per our ethics, we only upload content after the movie’s theatrical release. The movie will not be uploaded here before its official release. ”
Industry observers say the incident again highlights the challenge of controlling piracy networks, noting that such websites often continue to operate despite warnings or legal threats, similar to the long-running crackdown attempts against iBOMMA in Hyderabad.
Producers warned that downloading or sharing the leaked film is a criminal offence , adding that cyber and forensic investigations are underway and civil and criminal proceedings will be initiated against those responsible.
