Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton could be returning to the franchise for its next instalment, with reports suggesting that he is being considered to direct Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 5.

The development comes as Brand New Day continues its remarkable theatrical run, reportedly collecting around $2.4 billion worldwide. The film has also mounted a strong challenge at the North American box office and is closing in on the domestic record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Cretton’s possible return is not entirely unexpected. Producer Amy Pascal had previously indicated that she was keen to continue working with the filmmaker after his stint on Brand New Day. Cretton, who previously helmed Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, brought a more grounded approach to Holland’s latest Spider-Man outing while balancing large-scale action sequences.

However, neither Sony Pictures nor Marvel Studios has officially confirmed Cretton as the director of the fifth Spider-Man film. The project itself also does not have an announced release date, meaning development remains at an early stage.

Cretton’s availability could become another consideration. The filmmaker has several projects linked to his name, including the live-action ‘Naruto’ adaptation and a ‘Hawaii Five-O’ movie. His existing commitments could influence the timing of another Spider-Man production.

Meanwhile, Holland’s future as Peter Parker continues to attract considerable attention following the success of Brand New Day. While reports have circulated about extensive plans for the actor’s return, details of his future Spider-Man appearances have not been completely disclosed by the studios.

If the latest reports materialise, Cretton would become one of the few directors to continue with Holland’s Spider-Man beyond a single film, potentially giving the next chapter a direct creative link to Brand New Day.

For now, however, Cretton’s return should be treated as a reported development rather than an official confirmation from Sony or Marvel.
