Tom Cruise Backs Paramount’s 30-Film Plan Amid Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Battle

Tom Cruise has hailed Paramount’s ambitious plan to release at least 30 theatrical films a year, calling it “awesome” as the studio moves forward with its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Speaking about Paramount CEO David Ellison’s commitment to significantly increase theatrical output, the ‘Mission: Impossible’ star said he believed the plan could benefit Hollywood and stressed that the film business should function as a united creative community.

“I think it’s awesome,” Cruise said, adding that the industry would need the support of artists, filmmakers and studios working together to make such an ambitious release strategy possible.

The proposed deal would see Paramount acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a transaction valued at about $110 billion, creating one of the world’s largest entertainment companies. Paramount has formally committed to producing a minimum of 30 theatrical films annually, arguing that the increased output could support jobs and strengthen the theatrical exhibition business.

However, the merger continues to face an antitrust challenge. California and other states, along with the Writers Guild of America, have opposed Paramount’s request for a $1.88 billion bond linked to potential costs caused by delays in closing the transaction. Paramount could face a “ticking fee” if the deal remains incomplete beyond September 30, 2026, while the legal dispute is expected to remain a major hurdle.

Cruise’s comments come as Hollywood debates whether greater studio consolidation will lead to more films or ultimately reduce competition. While Ellison’s 30-film pledge has won support from some in the exhibition sector, industry observers have questioned how sustainable such a large annual slate could be amid rising production and marketing costs.

Meanwhile, Cruise is preparing for the release of ‘Digger’, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 2, 2026. He also recently announced a ‘Days of Thunder’ sequel, with Anne Hathaway joining him in the cast. The film is scheduled for release on June 2, 2028, with Cruise returning as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle.
