
TN students code their future
In a landmark move, Tamil Nadu is bringing artificial intelligence, robotics, and coding to government schools, aiming to prepare students for the digital era. The initiative, call ed TN SPARK (Tamil Na du Schools Programme for AI, Robotics, and Knowledge of Online Tools), is designed for students of Classes 6 to 9, and seeks to bridge the technology gap between private and public schools.
This year, the pilot programme covers 85 schools in Coimbatore district alone, including middle schools, high schools, and higher secondary schools. Each school has dedicated hi-tech labs equipped with computers and interactive tools. Classes focus on AI basics, digital literacy, and coding, while teachers use bilingual textbooks in Tamil and English to ensure every student can follow along.
Students are learning foundational computer science concepts such as algorithms, flowcharts, word processing, and data visualization. AI modules introduce creative applications like text-to-image generation, animation, digital art, and text-to-speech tools. Coding lessons use beginner-friendly platforms like Scratch, Turtle Art, and Blockly, alongside introductory HTML and lessons on cyber safety.
Teachers report that students are highly engaged, often preferring these sessions to traditional classes. The programme is structured to gradually move from introductory exercises to more complex projects after quarterly exams, fostering problem-solving skills and hands-on digital experience.
Officials highlight that TN SPARK is not just about exposure to technology, it’s about building a generation of critical thinkers who can innovate and adapt. By integrating advanced tech training into government schools, Tamil Nadu is setting a model for inclusive education, giving students from all socio-economic backgrounds a chance to master skills that will define future careers.
With initiatives like TN SPARK, students are not just learning to code, they are learning to think, create, and solve, transforming classrooms into laboratories for tomorrow’s innovation.
