TN Govt’s ‘Tamil Pudhalvan’ Scheme paves way for boys’ Higher Education

The Tamil Nadu government is transforming education for underprivileged boys with the ‘Tamil Pudhalvan’ scheme , launched by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Coimbatore. Announced in the state budget 2024, the initiative provides Rs. 1,000 monthly to 3.28 lakh boys from government and aided Tamil-medium schools pursuing undergraduate, diploma, or ITI courses.

The scheme, replacing the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Marriage Assistance programme, ensures direct cash transfer to students, including those already receiving other scholarships. Multiple siblings can benefit simultaneously, encouraging retention and completion of higher education. Applications are submitted via the UMIS online portal , supported by the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency.The Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Marriage Assistance Programme and the Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme are two very different types of government initiatives and the former is replaced by the latter as the government is shifting priorities from welfare-based cash transfers to education-based empowerment .

Tamil Nadu wants to strengthen student performance and competitiveness in line with long-term socio-economic development.

Officials say the scheme, along with ‘Pudhumai Penn’ for girls and the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ skilling programme, is helping rural students realize ambitions in fields like engineering, medicine, and teaching. Beneficiaries such as Subbalakshmi from Ranipet and Ramya from Thanjavur highlighted how the monthly aid helped them continue studies while supporting their families.

At a government event on September 25, CM Stalin personally acknowledged students’ achievements, emphasizing education as a vehicle for empowerment. With a budget of Rs. 360 crores , the scheme is expected to significantly increase enrolment, reduce dropouts, and create a skilled male workforce, inspiring similar initiatives in other states.
