TN CM Vijay Orders Shutdown of 717 Tasmac Liquor Outlets, Bans Public Nuisance Banners
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Tuesday ordered the closure of 717 retail liquor outlets across the state, in a move aimed at prioritising public welfare and addressing long-standing concerns over the proximity of liquor shops to sensitive public locations.
According to an official release, the closures will be carried out within the next two weeks and include 276 outlets near places of worship , 186 shops near educational institutions , and 255 outlets near bus stands .
The decision comes amid growing public demand particularly from women’s groups and several political parties for stricter regulation and gradual closure of liquor retail outlets across the state. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) currently operates 4,765 retail liquor outlets statewide, and the latest directive marks a significant reduction in their number.
In a parallel development reflecting a broader emphasis on civic discipline, the ruling TVK on Tuesday issued a strict directive banning party banners and placards in public spaces that obstruct traffic or cause inconvenience to the public.
The party warned its cadres of “stringent action” against anyone found violating the instruction. The directive was issued through a statement posted on X by TVK General Secretary and Minister N Anand , and carries the explicit approval of the party president .
The party stated that the move is intended to reinforce its commitment to public welfare and reduce visual clutter and disruptions in urban and semi-urban areas caused by political hoardings.
Together, the two announcements signal a coordinated push by the state leadership and ruling party to address civic concerns ranging from liquor shop proximity to public spaces and traffic issues to visual disturbances caused by political displays.
