TN CM Stalin Expands Free Meal Scheme for Sanitation Workers Across State
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday launched the expansion of the free meal scheme for sanitation workers across all urban local bodies in the state. The initiative, the first of its kind in India , aims to improve the health and working conditions of sanitation employees who start early morning duties.
The scheme was initially launched in Chennai on November 15, 2025 , providing nutritious meals daily to over 31,000 workers in the city’s corporation areas. Meals are delivered in tiffin boxes across all 200 wards of Chennai.
During Monday’s launch, held about 41 km from Chennai , CM Stalin interacted with sanitation workers and took selfies with them, highlighting the government’s commitment to their welfare. The statewide expansion now ensures that sanitation employees in other urban local bodies will also benefit from the program.
Officials noted that the scheme aims to boost workers’ health, morale, and productivity , recognizing the vital role sanitation workers play in maintaining urban hygiene. While the program currently covers permanent municipal employees , details on whether contract or outsourced workers will be included are yet to be clarified by the government.
