Facing one of its biggest political setbacks in recent years, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has initiated strict disciplinary action against leaders accused of publicly criticising the party leadership and its election strategy after the West Bengal Assembly election results .

The party on Saturday suspended three spokespersons, Kohinoor Majumdar, Riju Dutta, and Kartik Ghosh , for six years over what it described as “anti-party” remarks and violation of organisational discipline. The move comes amid growing unrest within the party following its dramatic defeat in the Assembly elections, where the BJP secured 207 seats , while the TMC was reduced to just 80 seats in the 294-member House.

The suspensions were announced days after the party’s disciplinary committee issued show-cause notices to five spokespersons seeking explanations over comments made in public and on social media. The notices were reportedly issued by senior TMC leader and MP Derek O’Brien , who is part of the party’s disciplinary panel.

Apart from the three suspended leaders, notices had also been served to Krishnendu Chowdhury and Papiya Ghosh . The party had asked them to respond within 24 hours and explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against them for breaching party discipline.

The controversy erupted after several leaders openly questioned the functioning of the party leadership in the aftermath of the electoral defeat . Some of the remarks directly targeted the organisational style and campaign management of the leadership.

Kohinoor Majumdar reportedly claimed that party leaders were often made to wait for long hours to meet Abhishek Banerjee , the party’s national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP . Senior leader Krishnendu Chowdhury also criticised Banerjee’s style of functioning.

Meanwhile, Riju Dutta triggered political debate after praising certain measures taken by the BJP government to control post-poll violence, comments that reportedly did not go down well within the party leadership.

Political observers believe the latest disciplinary action reflects the TMC leadership’s attempt to contain internal rebellion and prevent further damage after the crushing electoral setback. The developments have also exposed visible cracks within the party at a time when it is trying to regroup and rebuild its political strategy.

Senior leaders Derek O’Brien and Chandrima Bhattacharya , both members of the disciplinary committee, declined to comment on the matter publicly.
