TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Injured During Protest in Hooghly, BJP Rejects Attack Allegation
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee on Sunday alleged that he suffered head injuries after being attacked by BJP supporters near the Chanditala police station in West Bengal's Hooghly district, triggering fresh political confrontation between the state's two principal rivals.
The Serampore MP had visited the police station to submit a memorandum protesting the arrest of TMC workers when a group of protesters gathered outside, waving black flags and shouting slogans against him and other party leaders. Banerjee claimed that a hard object was thrown at him, causing injuries to his head and chest.
Speaking to reporters, the TMC leader alleged that the incident occurred in full view of the police and accused BJP supporters of orchestrating the attack. He briefly staged a dharna outside the police station, alleging police inaction and vowing to continue protests against what he described as BJP-sponsored violence .
The BJP rejected the allegations, asserting that local residents were expressing anger against TMC leaders and denying any involvement in the incident.
The development comes a day after TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly heckled during a visit to South 24 Parganas district. Following Sunday's incident, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee visited Kalyan Banerjee at his residence and accused the BJP of undermining democratic values through political intimidation.
A large police contingent and central forces were deployed in the area to prevent further escalation.
The episode has intensified political tensions in West Bengal , where accusations of violence and intimidation frequently accompany electoral and political disputes. Political violence remains a worrying feature of highly polarised state politics , with rival parties routinely trading charges over attacks on leaders and supporters.
