
Tirupati university houses Asia's largest veterinary museum
In a groundbreaking move for veterinary and wildlife science, the Department of Veterinary Pathology at Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University in Tirupati has established what is now being hailed as Asia's largest veterinary pathology museum. With a meticulously curated collection of over 900 specimens, the museum serves as a critical and unparalleled resource for research, education, and disease surveillance.
While humans can seek medical diagnoses for their ailments, the same is often not true for animals. To address this significant gap, the university's pathology department performs crucial post-mortem examinations on deceased animals. These examinations are key to identifying the diseases that led to their death, providing vital data for understanding and managing animal health.
The museum's collection is a testament to this tireless work. It houses a diverse range of specimens, including body parts from large mammals like elephants, lions, and tigers, as well as deer and other local wildlife. Many of these invaluable specimens are sourced from the Seshachalam forests and the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park, where they are collected after the animals have died from illness. The body parts are analyzed in the laboratory and then carefully preserved in glass jars using a ten percent formalin solution, ensuring they remain in a state suitable for long-term study.
