The Tirupati Municipal Council has approved a major proposal to expand the Greater Tirupati Municipal Corporation (GTMC), a move aimed at strengthening urban governance and improving civic infrastructure in the rapidly developing temple city. The proposal has been sent to the Government of Andhra Pradesh (GoAP) for final approval.

According to the plan, the municipal limits of Tirupati will expand from 30.17 square kilometres to 238.8 square kilometres, bringing 63 surrounding villages under its jurisdiction. The newly added areas are drawn from Tirupati Rural, Renigunta, Chandragiri, and Yerpedu mandals.

Officials said the expansion is intended to ensure better coordination in urban planning, infrastructure management, and public service delivery across both existing and newly merged areas. The move will also help address challenges related to rapid urbanisation, traffic management, sanitation, and housing demand in the growing Tirupati region.

The proposal, once approved by the state government, will make Tirupati one of the largest urban corporations in the Rayalaseema region. It is expected to encourage balanced growth between core city zones and the surrounding rural areas, while facilitating investments in infrastructure and tourism.

The decision to expand Tirupati’s municipal limits comes as part of a broader urban development strategy across Andhra Pradesh. Similar expansion or upgradation proposals are being discussed in several other cities, including Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool, and Anantapur.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is already among the largest in the country, but further expansion is under review to include suburban areas such as Anandapuram, Pendurthi, and Bheemunipatnam. In the capital region, the Vijayawada and Guntur municipal areas are being considered for integrated planning under the CRDA (Capital Region Development Authority). Proposals for Greater Nellore, Kurnool, and Anantapur Corporations are also in the discussion stage, aimed at improving governance and infrastructure in these fast-growing centres.

Among these, Tirupati’s proposal is currently the most advanced, having received formal approval from the Municipal Council and awaiting the State Government’s final nod. Once approved, the new Greater Tirupati Municipal Corporation will cover nearly eight times its existing area, positioning the city as a key model for integrated urban development in Andhra Pradesh.
