In one of German football’s most remarkable fairytales in recent years, SV Elversberg have secured promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history, completing a stunning rise from the lower tiers of the game.

The club from a town of just 13,000 people in Saarland sealed promotion by finishing runner up in Germany’s second division, behind already promoted FC Schalke 04 , after a commanding final day performance.

Early goals from Bambasé Conté and David Mokwa , followed by another strike from Mokwa, powered Elversberg to a dominant 3 to 0 win over bottom placed Preussen Münster , a result that ensured they stayed ahead of SC Paderborn 07 on goal difference in a dramatic promotion race.

The achievement marks Elversberg as the 59th club to reach Germany’s top flight since the Bundesliga was formed in 1963, underlining the scale of their historic breakthrough.

Forward Luca Schnellbacher struggled to contain his emotions after the final whistle, calling the moment surreal and expressing disbelief at the idea that global stars such as Harry Kane could soon be visiting their modest home ground.

Elversberg’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. The club were competing in the fourth tier as recently as 2022. They earned promotion to the third division that year, spent just one season there, and climbed again in 2023 to reach the second tier, where they have now achieved back to back success.

Elsewhere in a dramatic final round, Hannover 96 saw their promotion hopes collapse late on despite leading at one stage against 1 FC Nuremberg , as Paderborn moved above them to claim the playoff spot. Paderborn will now face VfL Wolfsburg over two legs to decide the final Bundesliga place.

At the other end of the table, Fortuna Düsseldorf were relegated to the third division after a heavy defeat to SpVgg Greuther Fürth , who themselves survived via goal difference in a tense finish.

As Schalke 04 celebrated their title and return to the top flight, German football closed its second division season with a mix of joy, heartbreak, and a fairytale story from Elversberg that will be remembered for years.
