Timor-Leste enters global MBBS map with new medical facility in Dili

Timor-Leste has taken a significant step in expanding its higher education sector with the inauguration of a new MBBS facility at Universidade Catholica Timorense (UCT) in Dili. The event was attended by key dignitaries, including J osé Honório da Costa Pereira Jerónimo and Cardinal Virgílio do Carmo da Silva .

The new facility , equipped with modern classrooms and advanced laboratories, reflects the country’s ambition to strengthen its medical education infrastructure and attract international students. The MBBS programme follows a 4.5-year academic curriculum plus a one-year internship , aligned with guidelines set by India’s National Medical Commission (NMC). It adopts a Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) approach, focusing on early clinical exposure and practical training.

In recent years, students particularly from India have begun exploring alternatives to traditional destinations such as Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Factors such as increasing competition, regulatory changes, and concerns over clinical exposure have driven this shift. Timor-Leste is emerging as a viable option due to its affordability, English-medium instruction, and similar disease patterns , which enhance practical learning for Indian students.

Despite being located near Indonesia, Timor-Leste remains relatively lesser known, largely due to its recent emergence as a nation and limited global academic visibility . However, improved infrastructure and targeted outreach are gradually increasing its profile.

Regarding recognition, MBBS degrees from Timor-Leste are valid in India subject to clearing the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) examination as per NMC norms. For the United States, graduates must qualify through the USMLE pathway , depending on institutional eligibility.
