The IPL playoff race tightened further on Thursday as Mumbai Indians handed Punjab Kings a crushing six-wicket defeat in a dramatic high-scoring contest. Powered by Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 75 and a game-changing spell from Shardul Thakur , Mumbai chased down a daunting 201-run target with one ball to spare, inflicting Punjab’s fifth consecutive loss and severely damaging their hopes of securing a top-four finish.

The defeat has left Punjab Kings in a difficult position, with the side now needing victories in both remaining league matches to stay alive in the playoff race. The loss also once again exposed Punjab’s growing struggles in defending big totals despite consistently producing strong batting performances this season.

Batting first, Punjab Kings got off to an aggressive start through Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya , who added a quickfire 50-run opening stand in just 33 deliveries. Prabhsimran continued his impressive form with a fluent 57, attacking the Mumbai bowlers confidently as Punjab raced to 55 for 1 in the powerplay .

Even after Arya fell to Deepak Chahar , Punjab maintained momentum with Cooper Connolly playing a steady supporting role. The hosts crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over and appeared set for a much bigger total before Mumbai fought back strongly.

The turnaround came through Shardul Thakur , who changed the course of the innings with two wickets in three deliveries. He first dismissed the well-set Prabhsimran before removing Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer for just four runs. Raj Bawa and Chahar tightened the middle overs further as Punjab briefly lost control.

However, Azmatullah Omarzai launched a late counterattack with a blistering 38 off 17 balls , helping Punjab recover to a competitive 200 for 8 . The total marked the eighth occasion this season that Punjab crossed the 200-run mark.

Mumbai’s reply began explosively as Ryan Rickelton smashed 48 off only 23 balls, putting Punjab under immediate pressure. Although Yuzvendra Chahal and Omarzai briefly brought Punjab back into the game with timely wickets, Tilak Varma anchored the chase with remarkable composure.

The left-hander first rebuilt the innings alongside Sherfane Rutherford before launching a calculated assault in the death overs. Tilak hammered Marco Jansen for two sixes and a boundary in a decisive 18th over before sealing the victory with two towering sixes in the final over.

Tilak remained unbeaten on 75 off 33 balls , while Will Jacks contributed a rapid 25 not out as Mumbai finished at 205 for 4 in 19.5 overs , delivering a major setback to Punjab Kings’ playoff ambitions.
