Tilak Varma undergoes surgery, set to miss New Zealand T20 series

Indian batter Tilak Varma has undergone surgery for a groin-related issue and is set to miss the upcoming T20 International series against New Zealand , raising doubts over his participation in the initial matches of next month’s T20 World Cup .

The 23-year-old Hyderabad batter was rushed to a hospital in Rajkot after experiencing acute pain while representing his state team in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy . Medical examinations revealed he was suffering from testicular torsion , a sudden and severe condition that can occur due to strenuous physical activity, abrupt movements while running, or external pressure from tight or protective sports equipment, and requires immediate surgical intervention.

A BCCI official told PTI, "Tilak Varma reported acute testicular pain in Rajkot where he was part of the Hyderabad team for the Vijay Hazare tournament. He was taken to Gokul Hospital , and scans confirmed testicular torsion. He underwent successful surgery and is currently doing well."

The official added, "We consulted specialists who advised immediate surgery. We will provide updates on his recovery and expected return to play after discussions with the medical panel."

The five-match T20 series against New Zealand begins on January 21 in Nagpur , and Varma is now confirmed to miss the series. The T20 World Cup , co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka , kicks off on February 7, with India facing the USA in Mumbai , followed by a clash against Namibia on February 12 in Delhi .

The New Zealand Cricket team has named a 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, which is expected to form the core of their T20 series against India. The squad includes Mitchell Santner (c), Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Adam Milne, Michael Bracewell, Rachin Ravindra, James Neesham, and Tim Seifert.
