Tilak Varma Guides South Zone Into Duleep Trophy Final With Seven-Wicket Win

South Zone captain Tilak Varma capped another outstanding performance with an unbeaten half-century as his side defeated North Zone by seven wickets to qualify for the Duleep Trophy final on Wednesday.

Chasing 181, South Zone completed the task at 182 for three in the second session of the fourth and final day. Tilak remained unbeaten on 51, adding to his first-innings score of 116 not out, while Ravichandran Smaran stayed unbeaten on 32 as the pair shared an unbroken 80-run stand for the fourth wicket.

The result means South Zone will face East Zone in the final, scheduled to begin in Chennai on September 6.

Tilak had already put South Zone in a strong position with his unbeaten century in the first innings, helping his team secure a 117-run lead. North Zone, however, fought back in their second innings to post 297, setting South Zone a target of 181.

The chase became tense after South Zone lost three wickets, despite Narayan Jagadeesan's 43 and Ricky Bhui's 42, who had added 64 runs for the opening wicket.

Tilak once again took control under pressure. North Zone pacer Gurnoor Brar tested the left-hander with sharp short-pitched bowling, while left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq extracted variable bounce from the deteriorating surface.

The South Zone skipper responded with a combination of patience and fluent strokeplay, producing elegant off-side drives before using the reverse sweep and paddle sweep to keep the scoreboard moving. Smaran provided steady support at the other end, and the two left-handers ensured there were no further setbacks.

Tilak fittingly sealed the victory with a boundary through the covers off part-time leg-spinner Qamran Iqbal, completing a memorable match in which he remained unbeaten in both innings. His scores of 116 not out and 51 not out proved decisive in South Zone's march into the final.
