Tilak takes over: Mumbai Indians demolish Gujarat Titans by 99 runs to end four-match nightmare
Rock bottom can be a powerful place to bounce back from, and Mumbai Indians proved exactly that on Monday night at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After a punishing streak of losses, MI roared back to winning ways, crushing Gujarat Titans by 99 runs to climb to eighth on the IPL 2026 points table.
GT captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field, and early on, the decision looked inspired. Kagiso Rabada tore through MI's top order, reducing them to 46/3 inside the powerplay with a ferocious spell of 3/33 . It looked like another forgettable evening for the five-time champions. Then Tilak Varma happened.
A steady partnership between Naman Dhir (45) and the irrepressible Tilak Varma steadied the ship from 96/4 in the 13th over . What followed was pure brilliance, Tilak shifted gears spectacularly, launching into GT's bowling attack with breathtaking power hitting. His unbeaten century powered MI to a formidable 199/5 .
The second innings was even more one-sided. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone in dramatic fashion, striking with the very first ball of GT's chase. Hardik Pandya added Jos Buttler shortly after via a DRS review, and GT's top order crumbled within the powerplay.
The returning Ashwani Kumar was the star with the ball, marking his comeback with four wickets , including the prized scalp of Shubman Gill. Gujarat Titans, who had been on a three match winning streak heading in, had no answers.
For MI, this was more than a win, it was a statement. Hardik Pandya's men are wounded but far from finished.
