Tigress Zeenat, translocated from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, has given birth to four cubs in Odisha’s Similipal Tiger Reserve , marking a major success in the state’s tiger conservation programme, officials said.

Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia confirmed that the cubs were born around 20–21 days ago and that both the tigress and her offspring are healthy. The cubs are under GPS-based tracking and continuous camera trap monitoring in the core forest area to ensure their safety.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described the development as a landmark achievement in wildlife conservation , noting that it reflects improved habitat conditions and strengthened protection measures in Similipal. Officials also said the birth has contributed to an increase in the reserve’s tiger cub population from 12 to 16 .

A camera trap image showed Zeenat carrying one cub, indicating strong maternal behaviour. She had earlier drawn attention after a 300-km movement across Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal , following her initial release in 2024, before being recaptured and reintroduced into Similipal in early 2025.

After being released again in April 2025, she was observed with resident male tiger T-12, confirming successful mating during the breeding window. Officials said she is a first-time mother , requiring enhanced protection protocols.

Zeenat and another tigress were originally brought from Tadoba in November 2024 to improve genetic diversity and reduce inbreeding risks in Similipal. After a brief enclosure phase and behavioural observation, she was shifted to a larger 20-acre soft enclosure before her final release.

Forest officials said round-the-clock monitoring teams have been deployed, and the forest department has implemented special safety protocols to ensure cub survival and long-term population stability in the reserve.
