Tight security blanket in Delhi ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr amid local tensions
The Delhi government and law enforcement agencies have ramped up security across the national capital ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, with heightened vigilance in Dwarka district and adjoining West Delhi areas still tense following a recent incident in Uttam Nagar.
Authorities said a comprehensive, multi-layered security plan has been put in place to ensure peaceful celebrations. More than 100 police pickets have been established across sensitive locations, while personnel have been deployed at key junctions and rooftops to maintain strict surveillance.
Additional forces, including central armed units, have been stationed in Hastsal village and surrounding areas where a March 4 clash between two neighbouring families resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man. The incident, which reportedly began over a minor dispute during Holi celebrations, had triggered protests and instances of violence, including arson.
Officials said security arrangements have been further tightened around religious sites such as mosques and Eidgahs, where large gatherings are expected. Regular area domination exercises, including foot patrols and vehicle checks, are being conducted, alongside flag marches aimed at instilling confidence among residents.
Special security measures have also been implemented around the Uttam Nagar East metro station following directions from the Delhi High Court to ensure adequate preparedness in view of potential unrest during the festival period.
In addition to ground deployment, authorities have intensified monitoring of social media platforms to curb the spread of inflammatory content. Police said several objectionable posts have already been flagged and acted upon.
A senior police officer stated that detailed deployment plans are in place and forces are prepared to respond swiftly to any situation. “Our priority is to ensure that Eid celebrations pass off peacefully without any untoward incident,” the officer said.
So far, 14 individuals, including two minors, have been apprehended in connection with the March 4 case.
While officials maintain that the situation is under control, residents in affected areas report a lingering sense of unease. Heavy barricading and reduced movement have made parts of Uttam Nagar unusually quiet, though the visible security presence has provided some reassurance.
Authorities said strict vigil will continue through the festival period to maintain law and order across the city.
