Opposition parties in Maharashtra on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the state government following a firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai, alleging that law and order had deteriorated and demanding accountability from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio.

Shroff escaped unhurt after gunmen opened fire near Pushpa Park in Mumbai’s Juhu area on Sunday evening. However, his driver and an autorickshaw driver sustained injuries, according to police. An official said multiple police teams had been formed to investigate the incident and establish the sequence of events leading to the firing.

Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal accused the Mahayuti government of allowing a situation resembling “jungle raj” to develop in the state. He demanded that Fadnavis resign on moral grounds, alleging that the government had failed to maintain law and order.

In a post on X, Sapkal questioned how the government could guarantee the safety of ordinary citizens if an actor could be targeted in a firing incident on a Mumbai street. He alleged that criminals had stopped fearing the law and that Fadnavis had lost control over the police administration. Sapkal said the Chief Minister should accept responsibility for his failure to discharge his duties as both Chief Minister and Home Minister and resign immediately.

Congress leader Sachin Sawant also criticised the state government, saying Mumbai appeared to be gripped by chaos. Referring to the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique, the firing outside actor Salman Khan’s residence and threats against actors and film producers, Sawant questioned the government’s efforts to control anti-social elements. He said the situation had become so concerning that people who once compared Maharashtra unfavourably with Bihar were now claiming that Bihar was in a better position.

Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad demanded the appointment of a separate Home Minister for Maharashtra. In a video statement, she questioned whether law and order remained effective in Mumbai, whether the police still commanded the same authority and respect, and whether criminals feared law enforcement agencies. She asked how ordinary citizens could expect to be safe if actors and political leaders were also vulnerable.

NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar described the firing incident as alarming, particularly as it came days after the killing of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Pradeep Purnekar in Thane. He also referred to the firing outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Juhu residence, warning that repeated incidents of violence in Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, could undermine investor confidence. Pawar said the Home portfolio should be handed to a competent minister if the situation had become difficult to handle.

NCP (SP) national spokesperson Clyde Crasto alleged that criminals were operating without fear of the law, pointing to incidents involving weapons ranging from sickles to firearms. He urged Fadnavis to take proactive measures to restore public confidence, strengthen law enforcement and ensure that citizens felt safe and secure.

The firing incident has intensified the political debate over Maharashtra’s security situation, with Opposition leaders demanding stronger action against criminals and greater accountability from the state government. Police are continuing their investigation into the attack.
