Thunderstorm Turns Fatal: Farmers Die in Bidar Lightning Strike
Two farmers were killed after a lightning strike during a sudden thunderstorm in Bidar district of Karnataka, police said on Friday. The victims have been identified as Revanasiddha (28), a resident of Navadagi, and Yallalinga (28) from Jevargi.
According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday evening in Navadagi village of Bhalki taluk, where both men were working in their agricultural fields. As the weather abruptly changed and rain began to pour, the two sought shelter under a mango tree . “Lightning struck the same tree, resulting in their death on the spot,” officials said. A case has been registered at the Khatak Chincholi police station.
The tragedy comes at a time when parts of southern India, particularly Kerala and Karnataka, are witnessing the seasonal onset of “mango showers” pre-monsoon rains that aid the ripening of mango crops. While beneficial for agriculture, these showers are often accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning , increasing the risk of such fatal incidents.
Authorities have reiterated advisories urging people to avoid taking shelter under trees or open structures during thunderstorms, as they are particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes.
In response to such incidents, state governments, including Karnataka, have provisions for ex gratia compensation to the families of victims of natural calamities. Financial assistance is typically provided under disaster relief norms, aimed at supporting the bereaved families. Additionally, awareness campaigns and early warning systems have been strengthened in recent years to reduce lightning-related casualties.
Officials continue to urge vigilance, especially during the ongoing pre-monsoon period, when sudden weather changes can turn hazardous within minutes.
