Thrissur Blast: Probe Panel May Suggest Safer Fireworks, No Ban Likely
Following the deadly explosion at a fireworks unit in Kerala’s Thrissur district that left around 14 people feared dead, the state government has ordered a judicial probe headed by former High Court judge C N Ramachandran Nair.
The blast occurred at a facility preparing crackers for the upcoming Thrissur Pooram, one of the state’s most prominent cultural events. Officials said several workers were present when the explosion and subsequent blasts disrupted rescue operations.
Speaking after his appointment, Justice Nair indicated that the commission is unlikely to recommend a ban on firecrackers. Instead, it will examine safer alternatives, including possible changes in fireworks patterns to reduce risk while preserving the festive tradition.
The probe aims to identify lapses and suggest measures to prevent similar incidents in the future without affecting the cultural significance of fireworks in temple celebrations.
