A three-year-old girl died of severe burn injuries after a vessel of boiling milk spilled on her while she was trying to escape a barking dog in Maharashtra’s Beed district, police said on Saturday.

The child, Durga Pradeep Budhnar, was playing outside her home in Nandur Haveli on Thursday when a stray dog approached her, barking aggressively. She ran towards the house but tripped over a large vessel of boiling milk placed on an earthen stove, or chulha, in the courtyard, a police official said.

The boiling milk spilled over the child, causing extensive burn injuries. Her parents initially took her to a private hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Beed District Civil Hospital, where she died during treatment.

The incident occurred days after the family celebrated her third birthday on Dussehra, the official added.

The tragedy highlights household risks associated with hot liquids, open flames and cooking vessels, particularly in areas where young children play. Safety guidance recommends keeping children away from active cooking spaces and ensuring that boiling liquids remain out of their reach.

Cooking vessels should be placed on stable surfaces away from edges, doorways and frequently used pathways. Families using traditional chulhas should ensure that the cooking area is secure and separated from children's play spaces. Hot milk, water and oil should never be left unattended, and handles should be positioned to prevent accidental pulling or knocking.

Adult supervision is also important when toddlers are near kitchens or courtyards. Keeping walkways clear of utensils and other obstacles can reduce the risk of falls, while matches and other fire-starting materials should be stored safely.

In the event of a burn, first aid guidance recommends cooling the affected area under cool running water for 20 minutes. Ice, toothpaste, butter and oil should not be applied to the injury. Medical attention should be sought promptly for serious burns, particularly those affecting the face, hands or large areas of the body.

The incident underscores the need to keep cooking hazards away from young children and maintain safer household environments.
