Three soldiers injured as jawan fires on colleagues at Army camp in J&K’s Kupwara
Three Indian Army personnel were injured in a fratricide firing incident at an Army camp in the Trehgam area of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir , official sources said on Sunday.
According to military officials, on Saturday night , a soldier allegedly opened fire on his colleagues inside the camp , striking three fellow soldiers before being overpowered by other personnel .
All the injured jawans were quickly shifted to the local military hospital , officials said, adding that further details surrounding the incident are awaited as authorities continue to gather information.
There has been no official comment yet from Army officials or Public Relations Officers on the matter, and the defence establishment has remained silent publicly as inquiries proceed.
Fratricidal firing incidents among security forces, though rare, have drawn attention in the past, with defense analysts noting that prolonged operational stress, fatigue and personal pressures in high‑conflict environments can sometimes contribute to internal breakdowns, though no specific motive has been confirmed in this case.
This episode follows an earlier such tragedy in December 2025 , when a junior commissioned officer (JCO), Subedar Surjeet Singh, was killed in a firing incident at the Bari Brahmana camp in Jammu and Kashmir. That case, first reported late last year, saw investigations continue into early 2026 as authorities looked into circumstances and contributing factors.
Further updates are awaited as the Army’s internal probe progresses, and officials are expected to release more information once preliminary findings are available.
