Three Rhinos released into wild at Dudhwa Tiger reserve in major conservation push

Authorities at the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve have successfully released three rhinoceroses Harsh, Sushma, and Rashi into the open jungle , marking a key step in efforts to enhance genetic diversity in the region.

The trio, comprising one male and two females , was released on Monday following a day-long operation . Officials said the process to release three more rhinos is expected to continue as part of a phased plan by the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department to introduce a total of 10 rhinos into the wild .

Field Director and Chief Conservator of Forests H. Rajmohan said four rhinos had already been released in earlier phases first in November 2024 and again in March 2025 . Based on close monitoring, authorities decided to release the remaining six animals between March 22 and March 28 , completing the target.

The latest operation was conducted under the supervision of noted rhino expert and Padma Shri awardee K K Sharma . Tracking teams identified the animals in a fenced rehabilitation area , after which they were tranquilised, fitted with radio collars, and released into the wild.

The exercise involved forest officials, veterinarians, and conservation experts, including representatives from the World Wide Fund for Nature, ensuring careful handling and post-release monitoring .

India is home to the world’s largest population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, with over 3,200 individuals , primarily in Assam, along with smaller populations in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Officials said the programme at Dudhwa aims to build a stable, genetically diverse population outside traditional strongholds, strengthening long-term conservation of the species.
