Three Rajya Sabha Seats Vacant in Bengal, Bypolls Scheduled for July 24
The Election Commission has announced that by-elections to three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal will be held on July 24 , filling vacancies created after the resignation of three Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs.
The seats fell vacant following the resignations of Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik , who stepped down on different dates in June. Their exits came amid reported differences within the party leadership following the TMC’s electoral setback in the state Assembly polls.
According to the poll schedule, voting will be conducted in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly , and counting of votes will take place on the same day, July 24 , shortly after polling concludes.
The bypolls are being closely watched for their political implications in West Bengal , where the shifting balance of power in the Assembly is expected to influence the outcome of the Rajya Sabha elections. With the changed arithmetic in the House following recent electoral developments, the BJP is widely seen as having improved prospects of increasing its representation in the Upper House .
The vacancies and subsequent bypolls come at a time of visible political churn within the TMC, with the resignations of the three MPs highlighting internal strains in the aftermath of the Assembly election results. The results of the upcoming elections are likely to be seen as an indicator of both legislative strength and evolving political alignments in the state.
