Three Maharashtra Policemen booked for Abetment after 22 year old’s suicide in Latur

A case of abetment of suicide has been registered against three police personnel in Maharashtra’s Latur district after a 22-year-old man allegedly ended his life following sustained harassment, police officials said on Friday.

The deceased, identified as Imran Khalil Belure , a resident of Aurad Shahajani village in Nilanga tehsil, died by suicide on Thursday evening. Before his death, Belure posted a video on a social media platform accusing three policemen of repeatedly harassing him.

According to police sources, Belure had been booked in a theft case several years ago. His family alleged that he continued to face pressure from the police despite the case being old.

Following the incident, angry relatives and local residents staged a sit-in protest outside Aurad Police Station late into Thursday night, demanding strict action against the policemen named in the video. Tensions escalated on Friday when the victim’s relatives and several youths called for a shutdown, leading to the closure of the local marketplace.

Initially, an accidental death case was registered after the post-mortem examination. However, additional police forces were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incidents as protests continued.

In the evening, Belure’s body was brought to the town under police security. The family reiterated their demand for action against the police personnel, following which officials assured them that due legal process would be followed. The burial was later carried out peacefully.

“Based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s brother, a case of abetment of suicide has been registered against Assistant police inspector Vitthal Durpade , constable Tanaji Tile and head constable Vilas Patodkar ,” said Aurad police station inspector Sudhir Suryawanshi.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
