Three Latvian climbers were killed and a fourth was critically injured after a fall near a treacherous section of Alaska's Mount McKinley (Denali) , North America's highest peak, authorities and a Latvian mountaineering group said on Friday.

The climbers were part of a seven-member expedition attempting to summit the 20,310-foot mountain when the accident occurred near Denali Pass , approximately 18,200 feet above sea level. The area is known for its steep slopes, exposed ridges and history of fatal falls .

According to the National Park Service , the climbers were traversing a hazardous section of the popular West Buttress route when they fell. Recovery operations have been hampered by adverse weather conditions , and the bodies have yet to be retrieved. Three other members of the expedition provided assistance before returning to camp.

The tragedy highlights the growing risks associated with adventure tourism , as thousands of climbers from around the world attempt to conquer some of the planet's most challenging peaks each year. While Mount McKinley attracts only about 1,000 to 1,200 climbers annually, its unpredictable terrain and severe conditions continue to test even experienced mountaineers.

Extreme weather , including high winds, freezing temperatures and sudden storms, remains one of the greatest dangers on the mountain. Park officials note that many past fatalities have resulted from unprotected falls during descents between Denali Pass and high camp.

More than 130 people have died on the mountain since records began. The latest accident serves as a stark reminder that despite advances in equipment and safety measures, high-altitude climbing continues to carry significant risks, requiring careful preparation, sound judgment and constant attention to mountain safety .
