Three people were killed and eight others injured when an APSRTC bus rammed into a stationary lorry on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred near Srinagar Junction in Gajuwaka , where the bus, travelling from Rajamahendravaram to Parvathipuram , reportedly collided with a lorry that had been parked on the roadside. Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus driver failed to notice the stationary vehicle in time, resulting in a high-impact crash.

The force of the collision completely crushed the front portion of the bus. According to DCP (Law and Order) Mary Prashanthi , the deceased include the bus's assistant driver and two women passengers, all of whom died at the scene.

Eight other passengers sustained injuries, including the bus driver and two children. Emergency responders and police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to King George Hospital (KGH) for treatment. One critically injured passenger was admitted to a private hospital.

Officials said the bus driver suffered serious injuries, but the condition of the remaining victims is stable and none are believed to be in life-threatening condition. The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination before being handed over to their families.

Expressing shock over the tragedy, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav spoke with hospital authorities and district officials to assess the situation. He directed medical teams to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured.

Officials informed the minister that one or two victims may require emergency surgical procedures and are currently under close medical supervision. The minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and assured all necessary government support to the victims.

YSRCP president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He also urged the government to ensure quality medical care for all victims.

Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the incident. Both the bus and the lorry have been seized for examination.
