Three Dead After Exposure to Unknown Substance in New Mexico Home

Authorities in the United States are investigating a deadly incident in which three people died and multiple emergency responders were exposed to an unidentified substance during a suspected overdose call at a rural home in Mountainair.

According to New Mexico State Police, officers were called to a residence on Hanlon Avenue in Torrance County around late morning after reports of a possible overdose involving an unknown substance. Inside the home, responders found four individuals unresponsive . Three of them were later pronounced dead, while the fourth remains hospitalized in critical condition at University of New Mexico Hospital.

During the response, emergency personnel entering the scene began experiencing acute symptoms including nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and headaches , prompting a rapid escalation into a hazardous materials incident. Officials later confirmed that between 18 and 25 first responders and related personnel were exposed , all of whom were transported for evaluation and decontamination procedures .

Medical teams said most exposed individuals were asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and were later discharged, though three remain under medical observation , including two first responders listed in serious condition . Authorities have confirmed that all affected personnel were treated at the same hospital system in Albuquerque.
