On World Wetlands Day 2026 , three ecologically significant wetlands in Bihar that were added to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance last year received their official certification, underscoring India’s expanding commitment to wetland conservation. S. Chandrashekhar , Member Secretary of the State Wetland Authority (Bihar) , was presented the certificates by officials of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) at a ceremony in New Delhi .

Gokul Water Reservoir in Buxar district , an artificial wetland, and Udaipur Lake in West Champaran district , a natural oxbow lake, were designated as Ramsar sites in September 2025 , while Gogabil Lake in Katihar district , also a natural oxbow lake, was added in May 2025 . bringing India’s total number of Ramsar sites to 98 , with six in Bihar. The state’s earlier inclusions include the Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries in Jamui District .

These wetlands, primarily oxbow lakes formed by the natural meandering of the Ganga and Gandak rivers, play key roles in flood moderation and hydrological balance in the Gangetic plains, acting as natural buffers during high river flows.

Both Gokul and Udaipur wetlands are noted for their rich biodiversity and socio-economic importance. The Gokul Reservoir , spread over around 448 hectares , supports more than 50 species of birds and sustains local livelihoods through fishing, irrigation, and cultivation, especially during seasonal water fluctuations. Udaipur Lake , extending over about 319 hectares , lies adjacent to the Udaipur Wildlife Sanctuary and serves as an important wintering habitat for migratory waterfowl and other wildlife species, supporting a diverse array of plant life.

According to the MoEF&CC , ground verification has been completed for 4,316 wetlands in Bihar larger than 2.25 hectares , highlighting the state’s extensive wetland resources and potential for further conservation action.

World Wetlands Day , observed annually on February 2 , commemorates the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran , in 1971 , an international treaty for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. The 2026 global theme , “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” emphasizes the vital role of indigenous and local communities in safeguarding these ecosystems.

India’s growing number of Ramsar sites reflects a broader national effort to conserve biodiversity, maintain hydrological functions, support livelihoods, and enhance eco-tourism while addressing environmental challenges in a time of climate stress.
