“This culture must stop”: Jaya Bachchan on roadblocks due to VIP convoys
Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Amitabh Bachchan on Monday drew attention to the growing problem of VIP movements causing roadblocks and traffic diversions across the country, highlighting how the daily lives of ordinary citizens are being disrupted.
Speaking during the Zero Hour in the House, the Samajwadi Party MP stressed that the cavalcades of politicians, high-ranking officials, and dignitaries often create unnecessary inconveniences for people trying to commute. “I have travelled extensively abroad, but nowhere have I seen VIP convoys that stop the common people on the streets,” Bachchan remarked.
She recalled a recent incident at Shardula Dwar , where Rajya Sabha MPs were unable to exit through the main door because it was locked for VIP movements. “In my 22 years in this Parliament, I have never faced such humiliation. We are not a threat to any VIPs, particularly political leaders,” she emphasised.
Bachchan also pointed out that roads near the residences of prominent politicians frequently remain blocked, creating major disruptions. She noted that the problem extends beyond ordinary commuters, with ambulances and emergency vehicles also getting stuck due to VIP convoys.
Urging Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan to raise the matter with the government, she said, “Sir, speak to the government. You are the Vice President of this country. This culture has to end to respect the dignity of taxpayers who have sent us to this House.”
The MP’s remarks have reignited the debate on balancing security needs of VIPs with the convenience and safety of the general public.
