Thirumavalavan Calls for DMK-TVK Unity Against BJP, DMK Rejects Proposal

VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan's call for a DMK-TVK collaboration against the BJP has intensified political debate in Tamil Nadu, exposing widening differences within the Dravidian camp while raising questions about the future of opposition politics in the state.

The proposal comes after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) joined the TVK government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay , straining its long-standing ties with the DMK . Although the VCK has not formally ended its relationship with the DMK, tensions have escalated in the aftermath of the Assembly election.

Speaking at public meetings, Thirumavalavan argued that regional parties should set aside state-level rivalries to build a national front against the BJP and communal politics. Citing political arrangements seen in Kerala and West Bengal, he suggested that both the DMK and TVK should be part of a broader alliance despite being rivals in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK rejected the proposal , with party leaders stating that such a model would not work because the TVK has identified the DMK as its principal political opponent. DMK MP Ganapathy Rajkumar said the party leadership would not accept any arrangement involving the TVK.

Thirumavalavan also criticised the M.K. Stalin-led DMK , alleging it failed to adequately accommodate its allies by refusing to share power and allocating fewer seats than expected. He claimed this approach contributed to the party's electoral defeat and accused the DMK of attempting to weaken the VCK by inducting former legislator Panaiyur Babu .

Warning about the future of Dravidian politics , Thirumavalavan said a weakened DMK and a fractured AIADMK could create opportunities for the BJP to expand in Tamil Nadu. VCK leader Vanni Arasu backed the proposal, arguing that regional parties must remain united against the BJP's growing influence.

The episode underscores the challenge of balancing state-level political rivalry with efforts to forge a broader opposition alliance at the national level, even as the DMK remains unwilling to collaborate with the TVK.
