PV Sindhu turned back the clock with a breathtaking display of attacking badminton to defeat Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in straight games and clinch her maiden Japan Open title on Sunday, ending a wait of more than two years for an international crown.

The 31-year-old , a two-time Olympic medallist , produced one of her finest performances in recent years to beat the home favourite and three-time world champion 21-17, 21-17 in the Super 750 final. With the victory, Sindhu became the first Indian shuttler to win the prestigious Japan Open.

Displaying aggressive strokeplay, sharp court coverage and remarkable composure under pressure, Sindhu controlled the contest from the outset. She consistently dictated the rallies with powerful smashes and intelligent shot selection, preventing Yamaguchi from settling into her rhythm despite the vocal support from the home crowd.

Whenever the Japanese star attempted to stage a comeback, Sindhu responded with calmness and precision, winning the crucial points in both games to seal a memorable straight-game victory.

The triumph marks Sindhu's first title since the Syed Modi International in 2024 , bringing an end to a title drought that had tested one of India's most decorated badminton stars.

More importantly, it is her biggest championship victory since winning the BWF World Championships in 2019 , reaffirming her ability to compete with and defeat the world's best players on the biggest stages.

The victory also provides a massive confidence boost ahead of the upcoming international season and serves as a reminder that Sindhu remains a formidable force in world badminton.

For Indian badminton, the historic triumph adds another glittering chapter, with Sindhu once again proving why she continues to be one of the country's greatest sporting icons.
