‘The Wire’ star James Ransone dies by suicide at 46

Actor James Ransone, widely known for his impactful performances in The Wire and It: Chapter Two , has passed away at the age of 46. According to reports, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Ransone died on Friday, December 19, with the manner of death ruled as suicide. Authorities stated that no foul play was suspected.

While no official reason has been cited for his death, several reports noted that Ransone had previously spoken openly about his long-standing mental health struggles. In past interviews, the actor revealed that he was sexually abused as a child , an experience he said deeply affected his emotional well-being and later contributed to battles with substance abuse , including alcoholism and heroin addiction . Although he had been sober for many years, those close to his work noted that Ransone continued to be candid about the lasting impact of trauma, making it clear that suicide is often the result of complex and deeply personal factors.

The Los Angeles Police Department earlier responded to a call at a residence and completed a death investigation report, confirming that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ransone rose to prominence for portraying Ziggy Sobotka, the troubled son of dock union leader Frank Sobotka, played by Chris Bauer, in the second season of HBO’s critically acclaimed series The Wire . Appearing in 12 episodes, his character became one of the show’s most tragic arcs, culminating in a crime committed in a moment of rage and a final appearance showing Ziggy serving his prison sentence.

Born in 1979, James Ransone made his acting debut in the 2002 film Ken Park before gaining widespread recognition with The Wire . He later starred alongside Alexander Skarsgard in HBO’s war miniseries Generation Kill , portraying Marine Corporal Josh Ray Person across all seven episodes.

In 2019, Ransone reached a global audience with his role as the adult Eddie Kaspbrak in It: Chapter Two .
