The Statue of Equality: A Living Symbol of a Millennium-Old Social Revolution
In the spiritual history of India, many reformers have been born, but the great soul who sowed the seeds of "Equality" a thousand years ago was Bhagavad Ramanujacharya . Today, the 216-foot Statue of Equality at Muchintal, Hyderabad, is not just a tourist destination; it is a standing testament to a profound philosophy. Let us delve into the background, objectives, and the dedicated efforts of Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji in bringing this magnificent project to life.
The Root of Revolution: Birth and Childhood of Ramanujacharya
Born in 1017 A.D. in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, to Asuri Keshava Somayaji and Kantimati, Ramanujacharya arrived at a time when society was shrouded in the darkness of caste discrimination and untouchability. During an era when Vedic education was restricted to a privileged few, Ramanuja emerged as a simple monk to proclaim that God’s grace is universal and belongs to everyone.
His revolutionary spirit was evident when he received a sacred mantra from his guru, Goshthipurna, with a warning: "Keep this a secret, or you shall go to hell." Ramanuja courageously replied, "I do not mind going to hell alone if this mantra can bring salvation to thousands." He then climbed the temple tower and chanted the mantra for all to hear. This act of defiance transformed him from an ordinary monk into Jagadacharya (Teacher of the World).
Sri Ramanujacharya wrote 9 scriptures, the Navrathnas.
Vedartha-Sangraha - A treatise presenting the tenets of Visishtadvaita , a reconciliation of different conflicting srutis.
Sri Bhashya - A detailed commentary on the Vedanta Sutras. Sri Bhashyam is Sri Ramanuja’s magnum opus, which is the greatest commentary on Brahma Sutras. This monumental contribution was part of the 3 wishes Sri Ramanujacharya fulfilled for His revered Guru Sri Yamunacharya, who breathed His last even before meeting Sri Ramanuja in person.
Gita-Bhasya - A detailed commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita.
Vedanta-Dipa - A brief commentary on the Vedanta Sutras.
Vedanta-Sara -Another brief commentary on the Vedanta Sutras meant for beginners.
Saranagati-Gadya - A prayer of complete surrender to the lotus feet of Lord Srimannarayana.
Sriranga-Gadya - Manuals of self surrender to Lord Vishnu.
Sri Vaikuntha-Gadya - Describes Sri Vaikuntha-loka and the position of the liberated souls.
Nitya-Grantha - A short manual intended to guide the devotees about day to day worship and activities.
The 'Statue of Equality' Project: Vision and Construction
To commemorate the 1000th birth anniversary (1017–2017) of Ramanujacharya, Sri Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji initiated this monumental project.
Engineering Marvel:
This is the world’s second-tallest sitting statue. It is made of Panchaloha (a five-metal alloy consisting of gold, silver, copper, brass, and zinc).
Global Collaboration:
The components of the statue were manufactured by the Aerosun Corporation in China and transported to India. Thousands of artisans and workers worked day and night to complete this masterpiece.
Philosophy:
The primary objective is to spread Ramanuja’s message: "See God in all living beings, and have compassion for all." The center spans 45 acres and is designed as a spiritual city known as Sriram Nagar .
Bhadra Vedi: The Abode of Knowledge
The 54-foot-high pedestal on which the statue sits is called the Bhadra Vedi . It is more than just a base; it serves as a spiritual university.
Museum & Library:
It houses a digital library and galleries depicting key events from Ramanuja's life.
The Golden Deity:
Inside the Bhadra Vedi, there is a 120 kg gold idol of Ramanujacharya, representing the 120 years he lived on Earth. Daily rituals and Abhishekams (sacred baths) are performed for this deity, which devotees can witness.
Omnimax Theatre:
An advanced theatre provides an immersive experience of Ramanujacharya’s historical journey.
108 Divya Desams: A Pilgrimage in One Place
Another wonder of the center is the recreation of the 108 Divya Desams (holy Vaishnava shrines). Since visiting all these temples across India is a difficult task for many, Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji built their replicas in a single complex.
Each temple reflects the specific architectural style of its original location. Walking through these shrines gives visitors the feeling of a pan-India pilgrimage. Daily prayers and offerings are performed here according to the traditional customs of each respective temple.
Social Service and Vision of Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji
Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji envisioned this center as a hub for social change rather than just a monument.
Education:
Through programs like JTVK, he provides free education to the visually challenged and tribal communities.
Healthcare:
Mobile clinics provide free cancer screenings and health check-ups for women.
Environment:
He constantly advocates for the preservation of biodiversity and nature.
Selfless Service:
All proceeds from the center are redirected toward the welfare of society.
