From a young boy with extraordinary dreams on the island of Madeira to a global sporting icon who conquered football's biggest stages, Cristiano Ronaldo's remarkable journey with Portugal has reached its final chapter. The 41-year-old forward has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a glittering 23-year career that redefined goalscoring, shattered records and inspired generations across the world.

In an emotional video message shared on social media, Ronaldo said it was time to hand over Portugal's iconic No. 7 jersey to the next generation. "Today the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision because some decisions are not made with the mind alone. They are also made with the heart," he said.

Since making his international debut in August 2003, Ronaldo has grown into the most influential figure in Portuguese football history. He leaves the national team with 234 appearances and a record 146 goals, making him the most-capped player and highest goalscorer in men's international football. His journey included six FIFA World Cups, making him the first male footballer to score in six different editions of the tournament.

The defining moment of his international career arrived at Euro 2016, when he captained Portugal to its first-ever European Championship title. Although an injury forced him off during the final against France, Ronaldo remained on the sidelines, passionately encouraging his teammates as they secured a historic 1-0 victory. He subsequently helped Portugal lift the UEFA Nations League trophy in 2019 and 2025, adding to a legacy that transformed the country's standing in international football.

His departure follows a reported disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time. Ronaldo was left on the bench during a subsequent match and later walked out of the team's training camp. Although Jesus indicated that the forward was welcome to return, Ronaldo has now decided to end his international career.

But Ronaldo's greatness was never confined to the national team. His extraordinary club career took him from Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, with another spell at Manchester United along the way. At Real Madrid, he became the club's all-time leading scorer with 451 goals in 438 appearances, winning four Champions League titles. He also lifted Europe's biggest club trophy with Manchester United, taking his total to five Champions League titles.

His individual collection is equally remarkable, featuring five Ballon d'Or awards, multiple Golden Shoe honours and numerous domestic and international trophies. He became the first player to score 100 goals in the Champions League and established himself as one of the competition's most prolific performers.

Ronaldo's impact on football, however, goes well beyond trophies and statistics. Alongside Lionel Messi, his extraordinary rivalry defined an entire generation, pushing the boundaries of individual excellence and keeping football fans captivated for nearly two decades. Their contrasting styles, relentless pursuit of records and consistency at the highest level made them central figures in one of sport's greatest rivalries.

From his explosive pace and dazzling footwork as a young winger to his evolution into a ruthless goalscorer, Ronaldo continually reinvented himself. His dedication to fitness, discipline and physical conditioning allowed him to remain competitive well into his forties, challenging conventional ideas about an athlete's longevity. His global popularity also helped turn footballers into worldwide sporting brands, with his influence reaching millions beyond the football pitch.

The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed deep gratitude and admiration for his contribution, describing him as an inspiration to generations of young players. It also plans to organise a special tribute, giving supporters an opportunity to celebrate the player who carried their country's hopes for more than two decades.

For Ronaldo, however, the final whistle has not sounded on his playing career. He is expected to continue representing Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, with another extraordinary milestone within reach. Having scored 985 career goals, he is closing in on the coveted 1,000-goal mark.

Ronaldo’s international journey was not without its frustrations. For a player who repeatedly carried Portugal’s hopes, there were moments when the support around him appeared to fall short of his ambitions. Despite his extraordinary commitment and match-winning ability, he could not always count on the team to rise to the occasion alongside him. In many ways, this was a legend who deserved better, a stronger supporting cast, both on and off the pitch, even as his own legacy remains beyond question.

His Portugal chapter may be over, but the memories of his goals, celebrations, leadership and relentless pursuit of greatness will endure. For a generation that grew up watching the No. 7 turn impossible moments into unforgettable memories, saying goodbye will be difficult. The shirt may pass to another player, but the legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo will remain his alone.
