The Last Whistle: Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' Release Sparks an Emotional Farewell Across Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu witnessed one of its biggest cinematic celebrations in recent memory on Thursday as 'Jana Nayagan', the final film of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, opened to packed theatres across the state. The release turned cinema halls into festival venues, with fans and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) workers gathering in huge numbers for the coveted first day, first show, marking the end of Vijay's three-decade journey in cinema and the beginning of a new chapter in politics.

From Chennai to Kanyakumari, celebrations began before dawn. Fireworks, drum performances, DJ parties, drone light shows and giant cake-cutting ceremonies greeted the film's release, while devotees performed traditional milk abhishekams on towering cut-outs of Vijay. Fans visited temples across the state to offer special prayers for the film's success, and colourful processions featuring chariot-style vehicles added to the festive atmosphere. One admirer even painted an entire luxury car with portraits of Vijay, while thousands wore customized 'Thangamey Thalapathy' T-shirts.

Major theatres, including Rohini SilverScreens, Woodlands and Casino in Chennai, were decorated with towering hoardings, including one describing Vijay as "the one and only power centre" of Tamil Nadu. The celebrations also drew international attention, with Japanese fans joining the festivities at Rohini Cinemas.

Despite the euphoria, the release was not without controversy. Videos circulating on social media showed heated arguments over alleged hikes in ticket prices at some theatres. Even so, the film dominated the state's exhibition network, screening on around 1,000 of Tamil Nadu's 1,168 cinema screens, making it one of the widest releases in the state's history.

Several prominent personalities attended opening-day screenings, including music composer Anirudh Ravichander, actress Keerthy Suresh, Speaker JCD Prabhakar, senior ministers N. Anand, V. Sampath Kumar and Arun Raj, along with producer Venkat Narayana. Ministers described the day as deeply emotional, praising Vijay's discipline during his film career and expressing confidence that he would bring the same commitment to public service.

Fans also highlighted how Vijay's elevation to Chief Minister had changed their own behaviour. Many said they celebrated responsibly, avoiding public disturbances out of respect for his office. Families travelled long distances to witness what they called a once-in-a-lifetime moment, with some children even missing school to attend the screening.
