The highway that will transform Bihar

Bihar is set to get a major infrastructure boost with the government approving the construction of the 4-lane Mokama-Munger section of the Buxar-Bhagalpur high-speed corridor, costing Rs 4,447.38 crore. The 82.4 km stretch, to be built under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), aims to be completed within three years, promising faster, safer, and uninterrupted travel for both passengers and freight.

The corridor will connect key towns,Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, and Munger,linking them to Bhagalpur, a region emerging as an industrial and logistics hub. Eastern Bihar’s Munger-Jamalpur-Bhagalpur belt is seeing growing industrial activity, including ordinance factories, locomotive workshops, food processing units, and agro-warehousing. Bhagalpur itself is a textile and logistics hotspot, renowned for Bhagalpuri silk, while Barahiya is becoming a center for food packaging and storage. The highway is expected to amplify economic activity, driving freight movement and regional trade.

Designed for an average speed of 80 km/h and a maximum of 100 km/h, this access-controlled highway will cut travel time between Mokama and Munger to just 1.5 hours. But the impact goes beyond convenience. Officials estimate the project will generate 14.83 lakh man-days of direct employment and 18.46 lakh man-days indirectly, while also encouraging new jobs and industries along the corridor.

Experts say such projects are game-changers for regional development, as transport efficiency often dictates industrial growth. A smoother, high-speed corridor reduces logistical costs, attracts investment, and opens new markets for local businesses. Bihar’s highway ambitions, if executed transparently and efficiently, could set a benchmark for infrastructure-led growth in India.
