The Dark Knight Returns: Part II Is New, Dangerous, and Extraordinary

After years of delays and anticipation, The Batman: Part II is finally coming together and early buzz suggests it will be worth every bit of the wait.

Matt Reeves ' sequel to his acclaimed 2022 noir masterpiece is locked in for an October 1, 2027 release, with principal photography set to begin April 2026 in the UK. Reeves refused to rush the process, and Warner Bros. backed him fully; cameras don't roll until the script is perfect. It now appears that moment has arrived.

The script is generating serious excitement. Robert Pattinson called it "extraordinary," promising the film will be "very, very different" and taking "big swings." Colin Farrell described it as "a contemporary genre masterwork dense, intelligent, and deeply detailed." Co-writer Mattson Tomlin put it simply: "new and dangerous."

The cast is stacked. Pattinson returns as Batman alongside Jeffrey Wright (Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred), Colin Farrell (Penguin), Barry Keoghan (Joker), and Andy Serkis (Alfred). Most notably, Sebastian Stan joins as Harvey Dent/Two-Face , with Gilda Dent rumored as a central antagonist. Scarlett Johansson also joins in an undisclosed role.

Reeves' Gotham remains entirely separate from James Gunn's rebooted DCU, a standalone "Batman Epic Crime Saga" with full creative freedom. That independence appears to be fueling the film's ambition.

The original The Batman grossed $772 million worldwide and reset expectations for the character. With a bold script, a powerhouse ensemble, and a director committed to his vision, Part II looks poised to go even further. Gotham's next chapter begins filming this April.
