Thailand’s PM gets royal approval to dissolve parliament, sets early elections

Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has received royal approval to dissolve Parliament, paving the way for early general elections expected in late January or early February 2026 . The elections come well ahead of schedule, as the last general vote was held in May 2023 , and under normal circumstances, the next election was due in 2027. The dissolution means the House of Representatives is now officially dissolved, and a fresh nationwide vote must take place within 45 to 60 days .

Anutin, who took office in September 2025 , announced the move on social media, saying he wanted to “return power to the people.” The decision comes at a politically sensitive moment for Thailand, marking a major shift just months into his leadership.

The push for new elections stems from political instability and pressure from opposition forces. Anutin’s government, formed after the previous prime minister was removed, has been operating as a minority administration , with key allies demanding changes to the constitution and threatening a no-confidence vote unless agreements were honoured. Analysts say dissolving Parliament was a strategic move to avoid legislative deadlock and secure a clearer mandate from voters.

Until the new Parliament is elected and seated, Anutin will lead a caretaker government with limited powers . During this interim period, the administration cannot approve a new national budget or introduce major policy measures, focusing instead on routine governance and overseeing the election process.

The dissolution occurs as Thailand faces escalating border clashes with Cambodia over long-disputed territories, heightening domestic concerns and public scrutiny. The upcoming election is seen as a critical moment for the country, giving voters an early opportunity to shape leadership amid both political turbulence and regional tensions.
