The Telangana power department is exploring the use of satellite-based data to anticipate agricultural electricity demand and improve power supply planning for farmers amid changing weather conditions and the potential impact of El Niño. As part of this initiative, TGSPDCL CMD Jitesh V. Patel visited the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) in Hyderabad on Tuesday and held discussions with scientists and senior officials on integrating satellite-derived information into agricultural power management.

The meeting was organised at the invitation of Dr Prakash Chauhan, Distinguished Scientist and Director of the NRSC. Discussions centred on how information gathered through satellite imagery could help the power department understand agricultural conditions across Telangana and estimate the electricity requirements of farming communities more effectively.

Officials examined the potential use of mandal-wise crop conditions, irrigation water requirements and groundwater availability in assessing agricultural power demand. Satellite observations can provide valuable information about crop patterns and changing agricultural conditions, while groundwater data can offer insights into irrigation requirements across different regions.

The integration of these datasets with existing electricity consumption statistics could help officials develop a more accurate picture of where and when agricultural power demand is likely to rise. This would allow the department to identify areas requiring greater electricity supply and prepare distribution plans based on anticipated demand rather than relying solely on historical consumption patterns.

The initiative assumes added significance amid changing weather patterns and El Niño-related concerns, which can influence agricultural conditions and irrigation needs. A more scientific assessment of these factors could help the power department prepare for fluctuations in demand and improve the management of electricity resources during periods of increased agricultural activity.

The discussions also explored how information collected through remote-sensing technology could be adapted to the specific requirements of the power sector. Combining scientific observations with operational data could support better planning and help officials make informed decisions about regional power requirements.

NRSC Deputy Director Durga Rao, V. M. Chaudhary (GD), ASDG (Agriculture), Aerial Survey Deputy Director Chandrasekhar and other officials participated in the meeting.

The engagement between TGSPDCL and NRSC highlights the potential for satellite technology to strengthen agricultural electricity planning in Telangana. The information gathered through such collaboration could contribute to future supply strategies, helping the department anticipate farmers' requirements and manage electricity distribution more efficiently as environmental and agricultural conditions evolve.
