Terror accused assaulted inside Sabarmati jail, probe launched

A terror accused lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail was allegedly assaulted by fellow inmates on Tuesday morning, prompting an internal inquiry by jail authorities and police officials.

According to officials, the incident involved Ahmed Mohiuddin Abdul Qadir Jilani, one of the accused in the Gujarat ATS case registered as 10/2025, in which three individuals Jilani, Azad, and Mohammed Salim had been arrested and subsequently sent to Sabarmati Jail.

Police Inspector K. Y. Vyas said that Jilani was attacked inside the prison barracks and sustained an injury to his eye. Immediate medical care was provided by jail officials, after which he was shifted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for further examination and treatment.

It was stated by Inspector Vyas that “on the morning of 18 November, Jilani was attacked by a fellow inmate, resulting in injury to his eye. Medical attention was given and he was later referred to Civil Hospital. A primary investigation has indicated involvement of inmates identified as Anil Kumar, Shivam Sharma, and one more individual. Further investigation is being carried out.”

The assault came days after the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested three suspects Dr. Ahmed Mohiuddin Syed, Mohd Suhel, and Azad from near the Adalaj Toll Plaza on November 9, ahead of the Delhi blast incident near Red Fort.

According to the ATS, two Glock pistols, one Beretta pistol, 30 live cartridges, and four litres of castor oil were seized from the suspects. In the official ATS statement, it was noted that the arrests were made while the men were allegedly supplying weapons and were believed to be planning terrorist attacks across multiple locations in the country. The accused were also suspected of attempting to produce Ricin, a lethal chemical compound.

Experts have warned of the dangers associated with the substance. Dr. Y. K. Gupta, former head of the AIIMS National Poison Information Centre, stated that Ricin remains an agent of biological terrorism and that even one milligram of the toxin can be fatal. He added that no specific antidote is currently available.A detailed investigation into both the jail assault and the larger terror conspiracy is underway, officials said.
