Telugu actor Sivaji apologizes after sexist remarks at Dhandoraa pre-release event

Telugu film veteran Sivaji sparked widespread controversy with comments he made about actresses’ clothing at the pre‑release event for his upcoming movie Dhandoraa , remarks that many critics said crossed the line from opinion into moral policing and misogyny. At the event, Sivaji urged heroines not to wear revealing outfits and to choose traditional or modest attire such as sarees, arguing that “beauty lies in complete attire” rather than “displaying physical assets.” He referenced legendary actresses like Savitri and Soundarya , as well as contemporary star Rashmika Mandanna , as examples of women who carry themselves with elegance in traditionally modest clothing. He also said that while people may outwardly praise revealing outfits, many silently judge them and that “glamour should be limited.”

The comments, which included slurs like “Daridrapu Munda” and terms associated with incel culture such as “Saamaan ,” drew strong reactions online and in the media. Critics argued that policing women’s clothing reinforces sexist norms and distracts from substantive issues of gender equality. Singer and activist Chinmayi Sripada was among the most vocal critics, condemning Sivaji for doling out “unnecessary advice” and highlighting double standards, pointing out that he himself frequently dresses in jeans and hoodies while selectively imposing cultural expectations on women.

TV host and actress Anasuya Bharadwaj also responded strongly on social media. In a post clearly directed at the controversy, she wrote that some people “confuse control with concern, and judgment with ‘protection,’” and emphasised that “a woman’s clothing is her personal choice. It harms no one, and it’s not meant for anyone.” She added that unsolicited commentary about what women should wear reflects insecurity rather than care, and that “real power lies in respect,” not in controlling others.

Amid mounting backlash, Sivaji issued a public apology. In his statement, he said: “I sincerely apologise for my words during the Dhandoraa pre‑release event last night. My intention was good, but it would have been better if those words hadn’t slipped out. Other than wanting to say something good, I had no intention of insulting or degrading anyone.” He acknowledged that his phrasing was inappropriate and admitted he had used “unparliamentary words” that could hurt sentiments. He clarified that he was not speaking about all women and explained that his comments were intended to convey concern about safety, though he recognised his wording was offensive.

The controversy has reignited broader conversations about misogyny, moral policing and double standards in the Telugu film industry. Social media discourse highlighted that such remarks are not isolated but symptomatic of persistent gender biases in professional spaces.
