A routine electoral exercise has turned into a major political flashpoint in Telangana, with the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP locking horns over the Election Commission's upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. While the BJP has hailed the exercise as a necessary step to improve the accuracy and credibility of electoral records, the Congress has warned that the process could lead to the exclusion of genuine voters, particularly among vulnerable and migrant communities.

The debate intensified after BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy accused the Congress of attempting to politicise a nationwide voter verification drive. Speaking to the media in Hyderabad, he said the revision process is designed to identify and remove duplicate, deceased, shifted and otherwise ineligible voters while ensuring that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls.

According to Maheshwar Reddy, the exercise is being conducted transparently across several states and should not be viewed through a political lens. He questioned why Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) were expressing concerns over a process aimed at strengthening electoral integrity. The BJP leader alleged that the Congress was trying to create unnecessary controversy to divert attention from its own political challenges.

The Congress, however, has voiced strong reservations. During a meeting of the party's Political Affairs Committee chaired by Revanth Reddy, leaders discussed the possible impact of the revision on sections such as Dalits, minorities, tribal communities, Lambadas and migrant workers . The Chief Minister reportedly expressed concern that voters who migrate temporarily for work could be wrongly classified as having shifted residence if officials find their homes locked during verification visits.

To prevent the deletion of legitimate voters, the Congress has directed its cadre to closely monitor the exercise and assist citizens in safeguarding their voting rights.

Under the Election Commission's schedule, the revision process will begin with training and preparatory activities from June 15 to June 24 , followed by a door-to-door verification drive from June 25 to July 24 . A draft voter list will be published on July 31 , allowing citizens to file claims and objections before the final electoral roll is released on October 1, 2026 .

With Telangana undertaking its most extensive voter roll revision in nearly two decades, the exercise is expected to have significant political implications ahead of future local body elections. What began as an administrative exercise has now evolved into a broader debate over electoral integrity, voter inclusion and democratic representation in the state.
