Telangana Votes Today in Massive Municipal Elections, 8,203 Polling Stations Ready
The Telangana State Election Commission has confirmed that all preparations are complete for polling in 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations across Telangana. Officials stated that extensive arrangements have been made to ensure the elections are conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful manner. These urban local body elections are a major democratic exercise, with 12,930 candidates contesting for positions across 2,996 wards . Polling is being conducted at 8,203 polling stations from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM , with authorities assuring that adequate facilities have been provided for voters.
A total of 52.43 lakh voters are eligible to participate, including 25.62 lakh men , 26.80 lakh women , and 640 voters from other categories. Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened, with police and security personnel deployed at all polling stations to prevent any untoward incidents. Surveillance measures, including webcasting inside polling booths, are in place to ensure transparency and smooth conduct of voting. If necessary, re-polling will be held on February 12 , while counting of votes will begin at 8:00 AM on February 13 . Elections for key civic leadership positions such as Mayor , Deputy Mayor , Municipal Chairperson , and Vice-Chairperson are scheduled for February 16 .
Politically, the elections are being viewed as an important urban political barometer . The Indian National Congress , which performed strongly in recent rural polls, aims to consolidate its influence in towns and cities. The Bharatiya Janata Party is attempting to expand its urban base, while the Bharat Rashtra Samithi hopes to regain momentum after setbacks in recent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has linked the elections to urban development, promising special master plans for municipalities under welfare-oriented governance.
Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy said elaborate security arrangements have been made, with sensitive polling stations receiving additional protection. Enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct led to weapon deposits, preventive actions, FIRs, and seizures of cash and inducements worth crores, underlining the high stakes. The elections are expected to significantly influence Telangana’s urban political direction ahead of future contests.
