Telangana Urea Controversy: Harish Rao Questions Govt Over Supply Gap

Senior BRS leader and former minister T. Harish Rao has accused the Indian National Congress-led Telangana government of imposing an “unofficial ban” on urea sales , triggering fresh concerns over fertiliser access during a crucial farming period. He termed the move anti-farmer , warning that it could disrupt crop cycles and deepen agrarian distress.

Responding on X , Rao alleged that oral instructions had been issued to halt urea distribution, even as stocks remain available with dealers, agri-centres, and cooperative societies . He questioned the gap between supply and availability , asking why farmers are struggling to procure fertilisers despite reported stock levels.

The issue comes amid growing scrutiny over fertiliser distribution in Telangana , where farmers have complained about shortages and delays linked to a new app-based booking system . While the system was introduced to streamline supply, many cultivators especially small and marginal farmers say it has created access barriers , forcing them to make repeated visits to centres without success.

Rao said the situation is particularly alarming as it affects critical crops like paddy, sugarcane, fruits, and vegetables , which rely heavily on nitrogen-based fertilisers like urea . Experts note that urea remains the most widely used fertiliser in India , making timely availability essential for maintaining yields and ensuring farm productivity.

The controversy also reflects a broader trend of rising fertiliser consumption in Telangana , driven by expanding cultivation of water-intensive crops . While authorities have advocated balanced fertiliser use , critics argue that supply constraints cannot be justified in the name of regulating consumption , especially during peak agricultural seasons.

Beyond fertiliser concerns, Rao accused the government of failing on multiple fronts, including paddy procurement, crop insurance, financial assistance, and loan waivers . He described official farmer outreach initiatives as symbolic , claiming they do little to resolve real challenges faced on the ground.

Demanding urgent action, Rao called on the government to lift any informal restrictions on urea sales , ensure transparent distribution , and restore a farmer-friendly supply system to prevent further disruption to agriculture.
