Telangana Unveils Mega EV Push with 20% Discount for Government Employees

Telangana has launched an ambitious drive to fast-track the adoption of electric vehicles , combining incentives, policy reforms, and infrastructure expansion to promote sustainable mobility .

The government is encouraging nearly five lakh government employees to shift to EVs by offering 10% to 20% discount through manufacturers. It has also waived road tax and registration charges , despite an estimated ₹1,000 crore revenue loss , prioritising public health and environmental benefits.

Led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy , the initiative aims to make Hyderabad a pollution-free city and avoid air quality crises seen in other metros. Senior officials including Ramkrishna Rao and Shivdhar Reddy recently reviewed EV models, underlining administrative commitment.

EV adoption has surged from just 544 vehicles in 2019 to over 2.5 lakh EVs today. The government now plans to expand usage across government fleets , corporate sectors, and public transport , including deployment of electric buses and conversion of older diesel autos.

Infrastructure is a key focus, with a target of 6,000 charging stations by 2030. Installations are underway with companies like Mahindra Electric, Ather Energy, Ola, and Gravton Motors. Vehicles older than 15 years will be scrapped, while the Vahan portal enables seamless registration at showrooms.

However, despite their strong sales, major players like Tata Motors and MG Motor India are not part of formal MoUs with the state. Industry experts say this is because Telangana’s partnerships currently focus on charging infrastructure rather than vehicle supply. Firms like Ather and Ola are actively building networks, addressing range anxiety one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption.

In contrast, Tata and MG follow a pan-India retail model , leveraging dealership networks and central subsidies instead of state-specific agreements. Their EVs already benefit from Telangana’s demand-side incentives, even without formal partnerships.

With rising fuel uncertainties and growing environmental concerns, Telangana’s strategy reflects a broader clean energy transition , positioning the state as a leader in India’s evolving electric mobility landscape.
